Life in Torreón changed because of how people used the land. At first, the area was a place for ranching and raising animals. Later, people used irrigation to bring water to the dry soil. This allowed them to grow lots of cotton. The city became a major center for farming and processing that cotton. Today, the economy uses many different industries. People work with metals, textiles, and chemicals. There are also many large companies like Peñoles and Lala that do business here.

The history of the area goes back a very long time. Archaeologists found that people lived there around the 10th millennium BC. Much later, a Spanish mission arrived in 1566. The city we know today grew during the era of Mexican independence. It was named after a "Torreón," which means a big tower. This tower was built to watch for floods from the Nazas River. A new railroad connected the city to El Paso in the United States. This caused the population to grow very fast. In 1892, there were only 200 people, but by 1910, there were 34,000.

Torreón is a major city in the Mexican state of Coahuila. It serves as the seat of the Torreón Municipality. The city is a vital part of the Comarca Lagunera metropolitan area. It is the second largest city in the state of Coahuila. Currently, the city has a population of 720,848 inhabitants. People often call it "The City of Great Efforts." This nickname comes from the way the city flourished despite difficult environmental conditions.

The geography of the region is defined by its desert climate. This is known as a BWh climate in the Köppen classification system. In this climate, rainfall is scarce but more common during the summer months. Temperatures are very hot during the day and cool at night. However, the city experiences the urban heat island effect. This effect makes summer nights considerably warmer than the surrounding areas. The terrain is generally flat, which allows the urban area to spread out. Higher mountains, such as El Picacho, sit on the southern, mostly uninhabited part of the municipality.

Torreón is located near the southwest border of Coahuila within the Laguna region. The Nazas River acts as a natural border. It separates Torreón from the city of Gómez Palacio in the state of Durango. To the west, the city borders the cities of Gómez Palacio and Lerdo. The city sits at a low elevation for the Mexican interior. This low position and the nearby river are important for the local landscape.

The history of the area is very deep. Archaeological findings show people lived there around the 10th millennium BC. A Spanish mission arrived in 1566, led by Father Pedro Espinareda. However, the modern city developed during the era of Mexican independence. It was named after a "Torreón," which means a big tower. This tower was built to monitor floods from the Río Nazas. The arrival of a railroad connecting to El Paso in the United States caused an economic boom. This boom led to a massive population increase. In 1892, the population was only 200 people. By 1910, it had grown to 34,000 people.

Torreón experienced significant upheaval during the Mexican Revolution from 1910 to 1920. The city was taken over more than once by different groups. One of the most prominent figures to take the city was General Pancho Villa. A very tragic event occurred in 1911, known as the Torreón massacre. During this ten-hour period, revolutionaries killed 303 Chinese immigrants. The city also hosted an important convention during the revolution. This convention led to a deal between the rebellious armies. Despite these hardships, the city continued to grow. It officially received city status in 1907 and celebrated its centenary in 2007.

The economy of Torreón has shifted through several distinct stages. Originally, the area was a center for ranching. Later, the introduction of irrigation changed everything. Irrigation allowed the city to become a major center for farming. It specifically became important for the processing of cotton. By the middle of the 20th century, it transformed into an industrial city. Today, the economy relies on many sectors. These include metals, livestock, agriculture, textiles, metallurgy, and chemicals. Large companies like Peñoles and the dairy company Lala operate here.

For sports, the Santos Laguna football team is a major attraction. They have won championships in 1996, 2001, 2008, 2012, 2015, and 2018.

Some notable institutions include the Universidad Autónoma Agraria Antonio Narro and the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education. These schools support the city's diverse industrial and commercial needs. The city also maintains strong international connections. It is a twin town with Laredo in the United States. This connectivity helps support its status as a thriving industrial and cultural hub.
