The city also has a large trading history. In the past, it was a place for cattle and farming. Now, it is a busy center for business and modern life. The General Roberto Fierro Villalobos International Airport helps people travel there.

History shaped the city in many ways. It was founded on October 12, 1709. A Spanish explorer named Antonio Deza y Ulloa helped start it.

There are many interesting facts about the city's past. In 1797, a census showed only 720 people lived there.

By 2020, the city and its metro area had nearly one million people. The city was a meeting point for missionaries. They traveled to the mountains to see the native Tarahumara people. During the Mexican Revolution, the city was a base for Pancho Villa's army. You can still visit his former home at a museum today.

Chihuahua connects many parts of Mexican history and life. It sits between the Rio Grande and important mining areas. The city's name might come from the Nahuatl language. This could mean "between two waters." It might also mean "a dry and sandy place."
