It sits in the state of Tamaulipas. The city is on the north bank of the Pánuco River. This river is near the Gulf of Mexico.

The name Tampico comes from an old word. It means "place of otters." Long ago, many otters lived in the rivers and lagoons nearby.

Tampico is a busy port. In the early 1900s, it was a major center for oil. This was a time of great wealth. People used the money to build grand buildings.

Some buildings look like those in Venice or New Orleans. Many have pretty iron balconies.

The city is very hot and humid. It gets a lot of rain from June to October. Most of the time, the weather is tropical. But once, in 1895, it even snowed!

People in Tampico love seafood. You might see crabs on buses or park benches. This is because locals are sometimes called "Jaibas," which means crabs. You can also try a big sandwich called a "torta de la barda."
