In 1519, Spanish explorers arrived at the coast. They built the city of Veracruz. It became a very important port. Ships brought many goods to and from Spain. They traded silver, chocolate, and sugar. This trade brought many new people to the state. This included people from Spain and Africa. Because of this, the people of Veracruz have many different roots. This mix of cultures is a big part of life there today.
