It sits between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. This area is the shortest distance between these two oceans in all of Mexico. The name comes from the town of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec. This name comes from the Nahuatl word for "jaguar mountain." The land sits in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca. Small parts of the region also touch Chiapas and Tabasco.

The land here is very different depending on where you stand. The northern side is wet and filled with thick jungle. The Selva Zoque is a huge rainforest in this area. It is the largest remaining tropical rainforest in Mexico. This forest is home to most of the country's land animals. The mountains, called the Sierra Madre del Sur, break down at a wide ridge. The highest point for the railway is at Chivela Pass. This pass is 224 meters high.

People have used this path for a very long time. In the 1500s, Spanish explorers wanted to find a way between the two seas. Hernán Cortés used this route in 1520. He moved supplies from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific coast. He used the Coatzacoalcos River to help move things. This river is about 200 kilometers long. People carried tools and supplies on their backs to cross the land. They even used shallow canoes to travel up the river.

Because of its shape, the isthmus is a busy place for travel. In the 1800s, people wanted to build a canal or a railway here. A railroad was finally finished in 1894. Later, a new line was built by a British firm. This line runs from Coatzacoalcos to Salina Cruz.

Life in the region is full of color and unique traditions. In Oaxaca, many people belong to the Zapotec group. The women are often called "Tehuanas." They are known for their bright dresses and strong personalities. They are also famous for being great traders.
