geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Sierra Madre Occidental is a huge mountain range system.

It runs through northwestern and western Mexico. The name means "Western mother mountain range" in English. These mountains are part of a very long chain called the American Cordillera. This chain forms the western backbone of the Americas. It stretches all the way from Alaska down to Chile.

The mountains are shaped like a high plateau. This flat land sits on top of volcanic rock.

Deep river valleys cut through this plateau over a long time. Some of these canyons are very deep and steep. One famous place is Copper Canyon. It is larger and sometimes deeper than the Grand Canyon.

Long ago, many volcanic events changed the land.

Ash flows and lava created layers of rock. These layers are called ignimbrites. These rocks cover a very large area. Some of these volcanic rocks even hold silver and gold. These minerals were important for people who moved to the area to start mining towns.

The mountains change how the weather works. They catch rain that would otherwise miss the land.

This extra water creates wet areas in a dry landscape. These wet spots are like islands of life for plants and animals. Oak forests grow here and spread into the lower deserts.

The rivers from these mountains provide water for farming in dry places. Many rivers, like the Yaqui, flow into the Gulf of California.

Many different people have lived in these mountains. The Tarahumara people live in the region near Durango.

Other groups, like the Cora people, live further south. Small families often live near farms or old missions. Traveling here can be a slow job. There are not many paved roads in the mountains. This makes it hard to move between cities quickly.
