Six different rivers carved these canyons into the earth. These rivers all flow into the Rio Fuerte. Eventually, that water reaches the Gulf of California. The canyon walls have a green or copper color. This special color is why the place has its name.

The weather changes depending on how high you are. The high mountain areas have moderate temperatures. The bottoms of the canyons are warm and humid all year. During the summer months, the land can get very dry. It stays dry until the rainy season starts in July. High up, you can find pine and oak trees. In the fall, the leaves turn bright colors.

People have lived here for a very long time. The Spanish arrived in the 17th century. They found the indigenous people already living in Chihuahua. The Spanish called these people the Tarahumara. The people call themselves the Rarámuri. Some think this name means "the running people." The Rarámuri are famous for their amazing endurance. They can run for many hours without stopping.

There are many important places to see in the canyon. You can visit the town of Batopilas at the bottom of a canyon. Another town, Creel, sits high up on the canyon rim. The ChePe train is a popular way to travel. This train started in the late 19th century. It was not finished until 1961 because the land was so hard to build on. The train uses 39 bridges and 86 tunnels. The whole trip takes about 15 hours.

Today, the canyon faces many different challenges. More people are moving to the area. New roads and farms can cause soil to wash away. Some trees are being cut down for wood. This can be hard for the local animals. For example, the Mexican wolf and the imperial woodpecker have disappeared from the area. There are also large dams being built on the rivers. People are working to protect the nature and the Rarámuri culture.
