The Mexican Plateau is a huge area of land in Mexico.

It sits in the northern and central parts of the country. This large area is also called the Mexican Altiplano. It stretches from the United States border in the north down to the volcanic belt in the south. The land is mostly dry and has many deserts. You might also find shrubs and small plants growing there. It is a very important part of the North American landscape.

This plateau is divided into two main sections. A low mountain range in Zacatecas splits the land. The top part is the Mesa del Norte. It starts at the Rio Grande and goes through states like Chihuahua and Coahuila. This northern area has many ridges and low spots. One of the biggest low spots is called the Bolsón de Mapimí.

The second part is the Mesa Central. This southern part is higher up than the north.

Water moves across this land in many different ways. Some rivers, like the Río Pánuco, flow east to the Gulf of Mexico. Other rivers, like the Río Lerma, flow west into the Pacific Ocean.

Some parts of the northern plateau have internal drainage. This means the water stays in basins and does not reach the sea. The southern part has many valleys. These valleys were actually formed by ancient lakes a long time ago.

Many people live on the southern part of the plateau. The area from Jalisco to Veracruz is a busy place for people.

It is home to many of Mexico's biggest cities. You can find Guadalajara and León in these valleys. Other large cities include Querétaro, Morelia, and Mexico City. Toluca, Cuernavaca, and Puebla are also located here. These cities sit in the lower, more populated areas.

Nature looks different depending on how high you climb. The low areas have dry forests and shrubs. As you go higher, you will see pine-oak woodlands.

Near the volcanoes, you can find thick conifer forests. Some mountain ranges even have forests that act like islands. These are called sky islands because they are surrounded by different land. The plateau is a big part of the Basin and Range Province.
