It is the largest freshwater lake in the whole country. The lake sits on the border between two states named Jalisco and Michoacán. It is located southeast of the city of Guadalajara. You can find it at 1,524 metres above sea level. Many rivers flow into the lake to keep it full. These rivers are the Lerma, Zula, Huaracha, and Duero.

This lake is quite shallow compared to others. Its average depth is only about 2 to 8 metres. The lake covers a large area of land. It is about 12.5 kilometres wide from north to south. Scientists used carbon-14 dating on old wood to learn its age. They found the lake is about 38,000 years old. This means it was around during the late Pleistocene time. It sits in one of the youngest geological areas on the continent.

There are many interesting things to see in the water. The lake has three small islands inside it. Isla Mezcala is the largest island of the three. It has an old Spanish fort and an old prison on it. There is also a tiny island called La Isla Menor nearby. You can see Isla de los Alacranes most easily from the town of Chapala. Many mountains and sierras rise up all around the water. These include the Sierra San Juan Cosalá and the Sierra del Tigre.

Many living things call this lake their home. It is a very important place for birds that fly long distances. People have recorded over 170 different bird species living there. You might see a great egret or an American white pelican. Some animals only live in this specific lake. These include the Chapala chub fish and certain types of turtles. There are also special crayfish that you cannot find anywhere else.

Many people enjoy living near the beautiful water. Towns like Ajijic and Chapala sit right along the shore. Since the 1950s, many people have moved there for the nice weather. About 30,000 foreign residents live in the area now. Many come from the United States and Canada. However, the lake has faced some hard times lately. The water level has dropped because of less rain and more water use. This can make life hard for the fish and the people who need them.
