Lake Nicaragua

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lake Nicaragua is a massive body of freshwater. It sits in the country of Nicaragua in Central America. People also call it Cocibolca or Granada. This name means "Sweet Sea" in Spanish. It is the largest freshwater lake in Central America. It is also the 19th largest lake in the world. It is the tenth largest lake in the Americas. It is slightly smaller than Lake Titicaca.

The lake has a very interesting shape and flow. It sits between Lake Xolotlán and the San Juan River. The Tipitapa River also feeds into the lake. Water drains out through the San Juan River. This river flows east to the Caribbean Sea. The lake is near the Pacific Ocean too. You can see the Pacific from the hills of Ometepe. Ometepe is the largest island in the lake.

Many animals live in these waters. You can find sawfish and tarpon here. There are even sharks in the lake! These are bull sharks. Scientists once thought they were a special kind of shark. Now they know these sharks can jump. They jump up the rapids of the San Juan River. They do this to move between the lake and the ocean.

History has shaped how people use the lake. In the 1840s, people used it during the Gold Rush. It was a main path from the Atlantic to the Pacific. A company owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt ran stagecoaches here. People also wanted to build a huge canal through the lake. They called it the Nicaragua Canal. Many plans were made over many years. One big plan in 2014 did not happen.

Today, the lake is a vital part of life. It is the largest source of fresh water for the nation. However, the water faces some hard jobs. In 1981, studies showed some pollution from sewage. Industry along the shore has also caused problems. In 2014, a very bad drought hit the area. The government even suggested eating iguanas to save water. Protecting the lake is very important for the future.
