It is shaped like a finger pointing toward the tip of Scandinavia. This lake is the second-largest in Sweden and the sixth-largest in Europe. It sits in a region called Götaland. The lake is very deep and holds a lot of water. In fact, it has about half as much water as Lake Vänern. Even though it is smaller in area, it is much deeper. Its deepest point is even below sea level.

Water moves through Vättern in a very interesting way. Many rivers and small lakes flow into it from many directions. The highest sources are near Nässjö on the South Swedish Highland. The lake drains out through a river called Motala ström. This river flows through a place called Bråviken to reach the Baltic Sea. Since 1832, there has also been a path through the Göta Canal. This canal connects the lake to Lake Vänern and the Atlantic Ocean.

This lake has a very long history. It began as a body of water left by a melting glacier. This happened about 10,000 years ago after the last ice age. Long before that, the ground moved to form a deep space called a graben. This happened between 700 and 800 million years ago. Many different types of ancient rocks sit at the bottom. These include sandstone and rocks called carbonates.
