Life on the island is a mix of town and country. Visby is the main town and the capital.

About 23,600 people live in Visby. This is about 40% of the total population. The rest of the 61,023 people live in smaller settlements or on farms. Many people visit during the summer months. They come for the sunny climate and the mild waters.

Today, Gotland is a fully integrated part of Sweden. It is not a separate land with its own special rules. The island has many ways to support its people. They use farming and food processing to make a living. There are also jobs in design and information technology. Some people work in heavy industry, like making concrete. They use limestone that is mined right on the island.
