It is also the largest island fully contained within the Baltic Sea. The island sits east of the Swedish mainland. It is located about 170 kilometers from the Baltic state of Latvia. The province of Gotland includes several other islands. These include Fårö and Gotska Sandön to the north. The Karlsö Islands, known as Lilla and Stora Karlsö, sit to the west.

Together, these areas make up less than 1% of Sweden's total land area. The county is the second smallest in Sweden by area. It is also the least populated county in the country.

The geography of the island is diverse.

The highest point is called Lojsta Hed. There are also several shallow lakes near the coast. The largest of these is Lake Bästeträsk. The island has an extensive shoreline bordering mild waters. This makes it a very popular place for domestic tourists. Visitors come for the sunny climate during the summer months.

In the winter, the water around the island often remains ice-free. This results in relatively mild weather for the region. The island's main town is Visby. It serves as the capital of the county and the seat of the municipality. About 23,600 people live in Visby. This represents roughly 40% of the total population of 61,023 people.

History on Gotland began a very long time ago.

Evidence shows that people have inhabited the island since approximately 7200 BCE. The native people were known as the Gutes. They spoke a language called Gutnish. Over recent centuries, Swedish became the dominant language. Today, the island is almost entirely monolingual Swedish. The name Gotland is closely related to the names of the Goths and the Geats. Legends in the Gutasaga describe how the island was settled by a man named Þieluar. These stories also mention a migration of people to southern Europe. This tradition is linked to the migration of the Goths.

During the Viking Age, Gotland became a massive center for trade.

Archaeologists have found an incredible number of Arab dirhams on the island. There are more of these silver coins here than at any other site in Western Eurasia. These coins moved north along the Silver-Fur Road. They were traded between Rus merchants and the Abbasid Caliphate. This trade helped make Scandinavia a major commercial center. One of the most famous finds is the Spillings Hoard.

This was discovered in 1999 by a metal detector. It is the largest Viking silver treasure ever found. The hoard contained about 14,000 foreign coins and many bronze objects. The finder's fee for the farmer was over 2 million kronor.

The Middle Ages brought many changes to the island's governance. Visby became a very important Hanseatic city in the Baltic Sea.

In the late medieval period, the island had twenty district courts called tings. These courts were represented at a central assembly called the landsting. The earliest recorded law for the island was the Gutalagen, written around 1220 CE. Control of the island shifted many times between different powers. In 1361, Danish forces invaded the island. This led to the Battle of Mästerby, where 1,500 Gotlandic farmers were killed. Later, the Teutonic Knights conquered the island in 1398. They destroyed Visby to drive out the Victual Brothers, who were pirates. Eventually, Sweden regained control of the island in 1645.

Modern Gotland is a fully integrated part of Sweden. It does not have special autonomy like some other offshore island groups in Europe. The island's economy relies on several different sectors. Agriculture and food processing are major sources of income. The island also focuses on information technology services and design. There is even some heavy industry on the island. This includes concrete production using locally mined limestone.

Tourism is another vital part of the economy. Visby hosts major events like Almedalen Week and Medieval Week. These events greatly increase the number of visitors during the summer.

Gotland also holds a strategic position for military purposes. Because it sits in the center of the Baltic Sea, it is a key location. The Gotland Regiment was re-established on the island in 2018.

The island's administrative structure is unique because of its location. The province, the county, and the municipality all cover the same territory. The diocese of Visby also matches the borders of the province. This makes the island a distinct and organized part of the Swedish state.
