Götaland is one of the three main lands that make up Sweden.

It is located in the southern part of the country. While it has no official administrative function today, it remains a vital part of Swedish identity. The region is composed of ten distinct provinces. These provinces are based loosely on the old jurisdiction of the Göta Court of Appeals. This court was established in 1634 to manage the area. Later, provinces like Gotland and Bohuslän were added to the group.

The geography of Götaland is diverse and varied. In the province of Småland, you will find very deep forests. The province of Scania is known for having plenty of farmland. Other areas, such as Västergötland and Östergötland, contain a mix of both woods and farms.

The coastlines are usually relatively flat. Visitors might see sandy beaches or many small islands known as archipelagoes. Götaland is also home to the two largest islands in all of Sweden.

Water is a major feature of this landscape. The region contains the two largest lakes in Sweden. One very important river is the Göta Älv. This river drains Lake Vänern, which is the third largest lake in Europe.

The river flows into the Kattegat sea. In the early 17th century, the city of Gothenburg emerged near the mouth of this river. Until the 13th century, the Göta Älv estuary served as the border between the Kingdoms of Norway and Denmark.

The history of Götaland is tied to the people known as the Gautar. In Old Norse, these inhabitants were called Gautar, and they lived in many petty kingdoms. These people are often identified as the Geats from the English epic poem, Beowulf.

The earliest possible mention of these people comes from the geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century. He referred to them as the Goutai. Over time, the name Götaland replaced the older name, Götland. This change likely helped distinguish the wider region from the traditional heartland of Västergötland.

The formation of modern Sweden was a slow process involving Götaland and Svealand. This political intertwining began at least in the 10th century. It continued for several hundred years as the provinces merged. During the Middle Ages, some parts of Götaland were actually controlled by Denmark or Norway. The province of Bohuslän became Swedish in the 17th century after being taken from Norway. During that same period, Denmark lost the provinces of Scania, Halland, and Blekinge to Sweden.

Significant historical events took place in the coastal towns of the region. The city of Kalmar is a very important historical site. In 1397, the Kalmar Union was proclaimed at Kalmar Castle.

This was a personal union that brought Sweden, Denmark, and Norway under one ruler. In the past, the island of Gotland also shifted its allegiance between the Swedes and the Danes several times. Even though it has links to Svealand, it is counted as part of Götaland today.

Today, Götaland is a large and populated region. It covers a total area of 87,712 square kilometers. About 4.4 million people live within its borders.

The region includes the second and third largest urban areas in Sweden. While it is defined by historical provinces, it roughly corresponds to several modern counties. These include Blekinge, Gotland, Halland, Jönköping, Kalmar, Kronoberg, Östergötland, Scania, and Västra Götaland.
