Kinnekulle is a special mountain in southwestern Sweden.

It sits in the county of Västergötland. The mountain is located on the eastern shore of Lake Vänern. It is a very long and wide mountain. The top of the mountain is a flat plateau. This shape makes it look like a mesa. It stands out from the land around it.

This mountain formed in a very slow way. About 550 million years ago, the bottom rocks were under the sea. Layers of sand and mud piled up on the floor. Remains from sea animals also settled there. These layers turned into different rocks over time. You can find Cambrian sandstones and Silurian slates here. There is also Ordovician Orthoceratite limestone in the ground.

History is hidden in the rocks and the soil. The town of Husaby sits on the south side. A well near the church is a famous spot. Tradition says King Olof Skötkonung was baptized there in 1008. This king was the first Christian King of Sweden. Many old stone tombs are also found here. These are called gallery graves from the Bronze Age.

Geology explains why the mountain looks the way it does. About 200 million years ago, the land rose above the sea. Molten lava pushed through the sedimentary rock. This created sheetlike layers of hard rock called diabase. This diabase acts like a shield for the mountain. It protects the softer rock underneath from wearing away. This is why the summit stays so flat.

Kinnekulle is a remnant of a much larger plateau. Long ago, the whole area was a flat plain. Now, only parts of it remain as hills. These hills look like islands in the landscape. They are made of Paleozoic sedimentary rock. The surrounding land is mostly Precambrian crystalline rock. Even a mountain in Svalbard shares its name. That mountain is called Kinnefjellet.
