This nickname comes from its many active volcanoes and large lakes. The soil here is very fertile and rich. Because of this, people call Nicaragua the "breadbasket of Central America."

Nature in Nicaragua is incredibly diverse and lush. One of the most important areas is the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve.

This is the second-largest tropical rainforest in the Americas. The weather is warm and tropical throughout much of the land. You might see many different living things here, like the turquoise-browed motmot bird.

Over time, the mixing of Spanish and indigenous people created a new culture. This mixture is known as mestizo, and it makes up most of the population.

Nicaragua has seen many changes in how it is ruled. It gained independence from Spain in 1821. In 1838, it became a fully independent republic. The country has faced many difficult times since then. There were periods of political unrest and even wars in the 1960s and 1980s.
