For many years, the Somoza family ruled the land as a dictatorship. This meant a small group held all the control. They ruled from 1937 until 1979. While the country grew in some ways, many people faced poverty. There was also a lot of corruption in the government. This unfairness led many people to want a big change.

A group called the Sandinistas wanted to stop the Somoza family.

They were known as the FSLN. In 1961, three men named Carlos Fonseca Amador, Silvio Mayorga, and Tomás Borge Martínez started the group. They worked with students and farmers to build support. The group used special fighting methods called guerrilla tactics. They faced many hard times and lost many members in battle. By the 1970s, their movement had grown very strong. They joined with churches and businesses to fight for a new way of life.

The revolution changed quickly in the late 1970s. In 1978, many people began to protest against the government.

One famous event happened in August 1978. A leader named Éden Pastora led a group to take the National Palace. They held 2,000 people as hostages to show the world their cause. By June 1979, the Sandinistas were winning most of the battles. On July 17, 1979, the leader Anastasio Somoza Debayle resigned. He fled to Miami, and the Sandinistas took control of the country.

Life was very hard for the new government in 1979.

Many people had lost their homes due to war and an earthquake. The new leaders wanted to fix the economy through agrarian reform. This meant they gave land to the peasants who worked it. They also started programs to help people learn to read. However, new fighting began in 1981 between the Sandinistas and a group called the Contras. This was part of the Cold War. The Soviet Union helped the Sandinistas, while the United States supported the Contras.

This led to the Tela Accord and the end of the Contra War in 1989. In 1990, the country held a new election. A group called the UNO won the election, and the Sandinistas lost power. This was a major turning point for the nation. The Sandinistas did not return to power until 2006. The long years of conflict changed Nicaragua forever.
