This war was fought between the government and various leftist rebel groups. Much of the struggle was about land and how it was shared. For many years, a few wealthy people owned most of the land. Large foreign companies, like the United Fruit Company, also held huge amounts of land.

This caused many problems for the rural people who worked the fields. Many of these workers were indigenous Maya people.

To understand the war, we must look at how society was set up. In the early 1900s, Guatemala had three main groups. The Criollos were a small group of people with European roots. They held most of the political power and owned the best land. The Ladinos were a middle class of mixed ancestry. Most indigenous people were Maya. They were the largest group in the country.

Many Maya people worked as laborers on large plantations. Sometimes they were forced to work because of debts they owed to landowners. This made life very hard for many families.

Changes in the government led to more fighting. In 1944 and 1951, new leaders were elected. These leaders wanted to improve working conditions. They also wanted to share land more fairly. However, a coup d'état happened in 1954.

This was a sudden change in power supported by the United States. It installed a military leader named Carlos Castillo Armas. After him, many military dictators ruled the country. The actual civil war began on November 13, 1960. It started when a group of military officers tried a revolt that failed.

During the war, many terrible things happened to civilians. The military held almost all the power for many years.

The government was responsible for most of the human rights abuses. It is estimated that 40,000 to 200,000 people were killed or disappeared. Many of these victims were Maya people living in the highlands.

In the early 1980s, the violence against the Maya was so great that it is called a genocide. This means the government tried to destroy a specific group of people. Many villages were destroyed during this time.

Peace finally came after many years of struggle. In 1996, leaders signed a peace agreement.

This agreement helped stop the fighting between the government and the rebels. After the war, courts began to look at what happened. In 2013, a court tried a former president named Efraín Ríos Montt. He was charged with genocide for his actions in the early 1980s.
