She belongs to the K'iche' Maya people. Her life's work is to protect the rights of Indigenous groups. She wants the world to see how they are treated. She has become a global symbol for justice and human rights. Her story shows how one person can speak for many people.

Menchú's activism grew from the hard things her family faced. During the Guatemalan Civil War, her family suffered greatly. Her mother and her brothers were killed by the army. Her father died in a fire at the Spanish Embassy in 1980. These events were part of a long and violent conflict. The war lasted from 1960 to 1996. It caused much pain for the Maya people.

She used her voice to tell the truth about these events. In 1983, she shared her life story in a famous book. This book was translated into many different languages. It helped people in other countries understand what was happening in Guatemala. She also helped lead groups to fight for fairness. In 1981, she had to flee to Mexico to stay safe. There, she continued to organize and help her people.

Many big honors have recognized her brave work. In 1992, she won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Menchú also worked to change how her country is run. She helped start Winaq, the first Indigenous political party in Guatemala. She was the first Maya woman to run for president. She ran for the position in 2007 and again in 2011. Even though she did not win, her party was very important. Today, she still works to help people find low-cost medicine.
