She spent much of her life working to help people and the planet. Before she was a politician, she was a trained doctor. She graduated from the University of Oslo with a medical degree in 1963. Later, she earned a master's degree from Harvard University in 1965. She worked as a physician for schools and health services in Oslo. Her background in medicine helped her understand how to care for large groups of people.

She had a very long and busy career in government. In 1974, she became the Minister of the Environment. On 4 February 1981, she made history as Norway's first female prime minister. At 41 years old, she was also the youngest person to hold that job. She served three different terms as the leader of Norway. Her second term began on 9 May 1986 and lasted until 16 October 1989. During this time, her group of ministers had many women in it. Eight of her eighteen ministers were women, which was a very high number.

Brundtland also worked to change how the whole world thinks about nature. In 1983, the United Nations asked her to lead a special group. This group is often called the Brundtland Commission. She led the commission to study how we can live well without hurting the Earth. In April 1987, they published a famous report called "Our Common Future." This report talked about sustainable development. This is the idea of using resources in a way that lasts for many years. Her work helped lead to big meetings like the 1992 Earth Summit.

After leaving her job in Norway, she became a global health leader. In May 1998, she was elected as the director-general of the World Health Organization. She worked hard to teach people about the dangers of smoking. She even helped make quitting smoking a rule for people working at the organization. In 2003, she was named a top leader for her quick work during a SARS outbreak.

She also served as a special envoy for climate change from 2007 to 2010. Her many years of work have earned her many special awards.

Today, her work still touches many parts of our lives. She was a founding member of a group called The Elders. This group was started by leaders like Nelson Mandela to solve big problems. She has also worked to help end child marriage through a group called Girls Not Brides. Even after many years, she has stayed active in local politics in Oslo. Her life shows how one person can work for their own country and the whole world. She remains a symbol of leadership for many people everywhere.
