She is a K'iche' Maya woman. She works to help Indigenous people.

Long ago, Guatemala had a civil war. This war lasted from 1960 to 1996. Many Indigenous people were treated very unfairly. They lost their land and their lives. Rigoberta's own family suffered during this time. Her mother and brothers were killed by the army. Her father died in a fire at an embassy. These sad events made Rigoberta want to fight for justice.

Rigoberta spoke to the world about her people. She told her story in a famous book. This helped many people learn the truth. In 1992, she won the Nobel Peace Prize.
