In 1989, a big war began in her country. The war lasted for many years. It was a very hard time for families. Leymah worked as a social worker. She helped people who were hurt by the war. She also worked to help young soldiers.

Leymah wanted to stop the fighting. She started a group called the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace. She led thousands of women. Many were Christian and many were Muslim. They worked together as one group. They met in markets and churches. They wore white shirts to show they wanted peace.

The women held protests. They sat in public places to demand peace. In 2003, Leymah spoke to the leader of the country. She told him that the people were tired of war. Her work helped end the civil war.

In 2011, Leymah won the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a very big prize for peace. She still works to help girls and women today. She started a foundation to help them learn and lead.
