The Guatemalan Civil War was a long and violent conflict that lasted from 1960 to 1996.

It was fought between the Guatemalan government and various leftist rebel groups. The core of the struggle involved deep disagreements over land distribution and social power. For decades, a small group of wealthy people held most of the country's land. Large foreign corporations, such as the American United Fruit Company, also controlled massive areas.

This created intense tension with the rural, indigenous peasants who actually worked the soil.

To understand the war, one must look at the social structure of Guatemala. In the early 20th century, society was divided into three distinct classes. The Criollos were a small elite of European descent who controlled political parties and land. The Ladinos were a middle class of mixed indigenous and European ancestry. The largest group was the indigenous Maya people.

Many Maya people worked as "mozos," or laborers, on large plantations. Some were "mozos jornaleros," who were day laborers paid a daily wage. Others were "mozos colonos," who lived on plantations and worked there to pay off debts. This system of debt often kept workers trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Political instability shaped the path toward war. During the Guatemalan Revolution in 1944 and 1951, democratic elections brought leftist governments to power. These leaders tried to improve working conditions and redistribute land more fairly. However, a United States-backed coup d'état occurred in 1954.

This event removed the reformist leaders and installed the military regime of Carlos Castillo Armas. Following this, a series of right-wing military dictators ruled the nation. The civil war officially began on November 13, 1960, after a failed revolt by junior military officers.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the government's control became increasingly absolute. In 1970, Colonel Carlos Manuel Arana Osorio became one of several military dictators. The Institutional Democratic Party, or PID, dominated politics for twelve years through electoral fraud. In 1982, General Efraín Ríos Montt seized power in a military coup. During the 1980s, the military assumed almost total control of the nation. They worked to eliminate enemies within every social, political, and intellectual institution in Guatemala.

The human cost of the conflict was immense and devastating. It is estimated that between 40,000 and 200,000 people were killed or forcibly disappeared.

Of these, between 40,000 and 50,000 people were considered "disappeared." While rebel groups fought the state, the vast majority of violence was one-sided. The Commission for Historical Clarification estimated that government forces committed 93% of all human rights abuses. The remaining 3% were committed by the guerrillas. Much of this violence targeted civilians, including students, journalists, and religious workers.

In the early 1980s, the violence reached a level described as genocide. The military launched coordinated campaigns against the Maya population, especially in the western highlands.

This period involved large massacres and the destruction of entire villages. In the Quiché region, the government's actions between 1981 and 1983 were identified as genocidal. The repression also included widespread sexual violence against Mayan women. Out of 1,465 reported cases of rape, soldiers were responsible for 94.3 percent. This systematic targeting of a specific ethnic group remains one of the darkest chapters of the war.

Following the war, Guatemala began a long process of seeking justice. In 1996, a peace agreement was finally signed to end the fighting.

In 2013, a significant legal milestone occurred when Efraín Ríos Montt was tried for genocide. He was the first former head of state to be tried for genocide by his own country's courts. He was initially sentenced to 80 years in prison. However, the high court later reversed the sentence and ordered a new trial. Ríos Montt died in custody in 2018 before the new trial reached a verdict.
