The Football War was a very short military conflict. It happened in 1969 between El Salvador and Honduras. People often call it the Soccer War or the 100 Hour War. This nickname comes from tense soccer matches played during that time. These games were part of a qualifier for the 1970 FIFA World Cup. While the soccer matches were famous, they were not the only cause. The conflict was actually about much deeper problems between the two neighbors.

The real reasons for the war involved land and people. El Salvador was a crowded country with many people. There were not enough jobs for everyone living there. Many Salvadorans moved to Honduras to work on large banana plantations. At the same time, land in Honduras was owned by a few wealthy groups. In 1967, a new law in Honduras gave land to native-born citizens instead. This law took land away from many Salvadoran immigrants. This created a lot of anger and tension between the two nations.

In June 1969, the soccer matches made the tension explode. The first game was in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. Fans were very angry and some even set fires. The second game was in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. More riots happened after that match. El Salvador eventually won a play-off match in Mexico City. However, many Salvadorans had already been forced to flee Honduras. This led the two countries to stop being diplomatic friends.

The fighting began on July 14, 1969. The Salvadoran military attacked airfields and moved troops into Honduras. They used planes like the P-51 Mustang and C-47 Skytrain. Soldiers also used trucks and armored vehicles to move forward. On July 15, Honduras fought back with F4U Corsair aircraft. One major battle happened at the town of Nueva Ocotepeque. The fighting was brief but included many different types of planes. This was the last time piston-engined fighter planes fought each other in a war.

The war ended after a cease-fire was arranged by the OAS. This group helped the two sides stop fighting on July 18. The war had very sad results for many people. Hundreds of people died, and most of them were civilians. Many thousands of people lost their homes and had to move. This hardship helped lead to the Salvadoran Civil War ten years later. Even though the war was short, it changed the history of Central America forever.
