The Mexican Revolution was a major series of conflicts in Mexico. It lasted from November 20, 1910, to December 1, 1920. Many people call it the most important event in modern Mexican history.

The fighting changed the country's government and its culture. It also replaced the old Federal Army with a new revolutionary army. This period was a long civil war between different groups. It was a very difficult time that caused about one million deaths. Most of those who died were regular people, not soldiers.

Before the war, President Porfirio Díaz ruled Mexico for a long time. He held power from 1876 until 1911.

Díaz focused on "Order and Progress" to grow the economy. He built many railroads, factories, and dams. He also invited foreign companies to invest in Mexico. However, wealth stayed with a small group of elite families. Many peasants lost their communal lands to wealthy owners. By 1900, over 9.5 million peasants worked for these large estates. This created a lot of anger and unrest among the people.

In 1910, a man named Francisco I. Madero challenged Díaz in an election.

Díaz jailed Madero to stop him from winning. In response, Madero called for an armed uprising. This was known as the Plan of San Luis Potosí. Rebellions started in Morelos and then spread to northern Mexico. The Federal Army was too weak to stop the rebels. Because of this, Díaz resigned in May 1911 and left the country. Madero was then elected as the new President in November 1911.

Even after Díaz left, the fighting did not stop.

Madero faced a rebellion from Emiliano Zapata in Morelos. Zapata and his followers wanted fast changes to land laws. In February 1913, generals staged a coup in Mexico City. They forced Madero to resign and later killed him. A new leader named Victoriano Huerta took power. This started a very bloody phase of the war. A group called the Constitutionalists, led by Venustiano Carranza, fought against Huerta.

They defeated the army of Pancho Villa by the summer of 1915. In February 1917, they created a new Constitution for Mexico. This document gave rights to workers and helped with land reform. It also gave more power to the central government. From 1920 to 1940, revolutionary generals held the presidency. They helped bring the military under civilian control. This era helped shape the Mexico that exists today.
