The Cristero War was a major struggle in Mexico. It happened in the central and western parts of the country. This conflict began on August 3, 1926. It lasted until June 21, 1929. The war was a response to new rules in the 1917 Constitution. These rules aimed to limit the power of the Catholic Church.

Many people felt these rules were unfair to their faith. This struggle became a very important part of Mexican history.

The trouble started because of how the government enforced the law. President Plutarco Elías Calles wanted to limit the Church's influence. He helped pass the Calles Law to do this. This law made it hard for religious groups to work. For example, priests could not wear religious clothes in public. If they did, they had to pay a fine of 500 pesos.

Priests who criticized the government could even go to prison. The government also closed many monasteries and religious schools.

To understand this, we must look at the years before. Mexico had just gone through the Mexican Revolution. This was a very large and costly conflict. In 1917, leaders wrote a new Constitution. It included rules like Article 130. This article said the state and churches were separate.

Earlier leaders were not strict about these rules. However, President Calles decided to enforce them very strictly. This change led to the uprising.

Many different groups reacted to these strict laws. One group was the National League for the Defense of Religious Liberty. They were formed in 1924 to protect religious freedom.

In some states, people held an economic boycott. They stopped going to movies or using public buses. This was a way to protest without fighting. In other areas, people took up arms to fight the army.

This fighting was very hard and caused many deaths.

Eventually, people found a way to stop the war. The United States took an interest in the conflict. The American Ambassador was named Dwight Morrow. He helped lead talks between the government and the Church.
