Gerardo Machado was a very important leader in Cuba. He was born in 1871 in a place called Las Villas. His father was a rebel who fought in many wars against Spain. After the war ended, he worked in many different jobs. He was a mayor, a businessman, and a farmer. He even sold tobacco to make a living.

In 1924, Machado was elected as the fifth president of Cuba. He led the Liberal Party and had many supporters. He used the slogan "Water, roads, and schools" to show his goals. During his first term, Cuba became quite wealthy from selling sugar. Machado wanted to make Cuba look like the "Switzerland of the Americas." He started many big building projects to help the country. He built the Carretera Central, which is a huge highway across the island.

He also built the beautiful El Capitolio building for the government.

Machado's time as president changed as the years went by. He originally said he would only serve one term. However, he changed the rules in 1927 so he could run again. He won the election in 1928, but many people thought it was unfair. This period of staying in power is often called "continuismo." As he stayed in power, the economy became harder due to low sugar prices. The Great Depression in 1929 also made things much worse for Cuba.

As the economy struggled, Machado became much stricter with his power. He began to take away the rights of many people. He closed several newspapers, including Diario de la Marina and El Mundo. He also closed the University of Havana in 1930 after students protested. This time was marked by a lot of serious conflict and violence. Many people were arrested, exiled, or killed by the police and army. There were even attempts on Machado's life by groups like the ABC.

By 1933, the situation in Cuba was very unstable. A new U.S. ambassador named Sumner Welles arrived to help. He worked with opposition groups to find a way to change the government. In August 1933, a general strike happened in the city of Havana. This helped a new provisional government take control of the country. Machado was forced to step down from his position. He left Cuba and went to live in Miami Beach, Florida.
