He was born on September 13, 1881. His father, Francisco Grau Vinals, grew tobacco on a large farm. His father wanted Ramón to follow in his footsteps. However, Ramón chose a different path in life. He wanted to help people by becoming a physician. He studied at the University of Havana for many years. He earned his medical degree in 1908. Later, he even traveled to Europe to learn more about medicine. He returned to Cuba in 1921 to teach at the university.

Politics became a big part of his life in the 1920s. He joined student protests against President Gerardo Machado. This led to Ramón being sent to jail in 1931. After he was released, he had to leave Cuba for a while. He lived in the United States for a short time. In 1933, a revolution happened in Cuba. Ramón became part of a group of five leaders. This group was called the Pentarchy. Soon after, student leaders met in a large hall. They debated who should lead the country next. They chose Ramón Grau to be the new president.

His first time as president was very short. It was called the One Hundred Days Government. It lasted from September 1933 until January 15, 1934. During this time, he made many big changes for workers. He created an eight-hour workday for people. He also raised the minimum wage for many workers. He helped people who cut sugar cane in the fields. He even gave more freedom to the University of Havana. These changes were meant to help the people of Cuba. His cabinet included many people, like Antonio Guiteras Holmes.

Leading the country was a very hard job for him. He faced many fights for power with other groups. A man named Fulgencio Batista was a powerful leader in the army. Batista made secret deals with other political groups. There was even a fight called the Battle of the Hotel Nacional. Eventually, Batista forced Ramón to resign in 1934. Ramón did not give up on his ideas, though. He helped write the 1940 Constitution of Cuba. This is a very important set of laws for the country. He even ran for president again in 1944.

Ramón won that election and served until 1948. He had to deal with many money problems left by others. The country had a lot of debt from the Great Depression. Even though he was popular, some people began to distrust him. He later tried to run for president again in 1954 and 1958. However, he withdrew from those races because of problems with the elections. He eventually retired to his home in Havana. He lived a quiet life after the Cuban Revolution. Ramón Grau died in his home on July 28, 1969.
