His father, Gabriel, was a farmer and a horse trainer. This upbringing helped Zapata understand the hard lives of rural people. He became a skilled horseman and even worked as a horse trainer. He also ran a business moving goods like maize and bricks. Zapata was a man of many talents and worked hard for his family.

At that time, large farms called haciendas were taking land from local villagers. These big farms used the land and water to grow sugarcane. The dictator Porfirio Díaz supported these large landowners. Zapata became the president of his village council at age 30. He wanted to help his people get their land back. He used his leadership to fight for the rights of the peasants. This fight for land became the main goal of his life.

In 1910, the Mexican Revolution began to change the country.

After that, a new leader named Francisco I. Madero became president. Zapata was not happy with Madero's actions. In November 1911, Zapata wrote the Plan de Ayala. This plan demanded that land be given back to the peasants.
