The Porfiriato was a long period in Mexican history. It is named after General Porfirio Díaz. He ruled the country as a military dictator.

Díaz wanted to bring "order and progress" to Mexico. He believed a strong government was the only way to grow. This meant keeping the country stable so businesses would invest money.

This era changed how Mexico looked and worked. It brought many new technologies to the land. However, these changes did not help everyone in the same way.

Díaz used several ways to keep control of the nation. He used a special police force called the Rurales.

These men helped stop bandits and kept the peace. He also built many new railroads across the country.

These trains helped the government send orders very quickly. Telegraph lines were built next to the tracks for even faster messages. This helped the central government reach far away regions. It made it much harder for people to rebel against his rule.

Porfirio Díaz was a general who fought in many wars. He first took power through a coup in 1876.

He initially followed a rule that said presidents could not be reelected. Because of this, a man named Manuel González served as president for one term. But Díaz returned to power in 1884 and stayed for a long time. He held many elections, but they were not always fair. He did not leave the presidency until 1911. This long rule shaped the entire history of the country.

During this time, the Mexican economy changed very quickly. The government invited people from other countries to invest money.

New industries grew, and cities became much larger. But this growth caused many hard problems for poor people. Large estates called haciendas grew by taking land from indigenous villages.

Many peasants lost their homes and had to work for very little pay. Some children even had to work in new factories. The wealth was not shared equally among the people.

The end of the Porfiriato came because of great anger. In 1910, Díaz ran for office again. A man named Francisco I. Madero challenged him. Madero campaigned for fair elections and no more reelections.

The 1910 election was fraudulent, which means it was not honest. This caused violent fighting to break out across Mexico. This period of war is known as the Mexican Revolution. It lasted for ten years and changed Mexico forever. The era of Díaz was finally over.
