The First Brazilian Republic was a major period in Brazil's history. It lasted from 1889 until 1930. Before this time, Brazil was an empire ruled by an emperor. The new republic was officially called the Republic of the United States of Brazil. This era changed how the country was run and who held power. It began when the monarchy ended and a new system started.

Changing from an empire to a republic did not happen smoothly. In 1889, a military leader named Deodoro da Fonseca led a movement. This movement was a coup d'état that removed Emperor Pedro II. The change was bloodless and had no fighting. At first, the country was ruled by military officers. This early time is often called the Republic of the Sword. The leaders used decrees to make new rules for the land.

As time passed, the government changed again. In 1891, a new constitution was made. This document set up a president and a Congress. It also created a system where states had more power. However, voting was limited to people who could read and write. This meant 95% of the people could not vote. Most people lived in rural areas and had little say in the government.

Power in the republic was held by a few strong groups. Two states, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, were the most important. São Paulo produced a lot of coffee. Minas Gerais produced dairy products like milk. Because of this, people called the system "milk coffee politics." Local bosses called "colonels" also held great power. They used a system called coronelismo to control local elections and politics.

Many people were unhappy with how the country was run. There were many rebellions and fights against the ruling groups. One group of people was called the Jacobins. They were often workers or military members who wanted a stronger central government. Finally, the Revolution of 1930 changed everything. A group called the Liberal Alliance helped Getúlio Vargas become the new president. This event ended the Old Republic and started a new era for Brazil.
