In 1889, Brazil changed its way of ruling. It stopped being an empire with a king. A leader named Deodoro da Fonseca led a movement to start a republic. This new government was called the First Brazilian Republic. It lasted until 1930.

At first, military leaders ruled the country. This time was called the Republic of the Sword. Later, civilian leaders took over. Two states held most of the power. São Paulo grew coffee. Minas Gerais made dairy like milk. People called this "milk coffee politics." These states helped pick the president.

Local bosses also had much control. They were called "colonels." These men ran local areas. They often controlled elections to stay in power. This was called coronelism.

Many people wanted change. Some groups fought against the leaders. In 1930, a revolution happened. A group called the Liberal Alliance fought to change the government. They helped Getúlio Vargas become the new president. This ended the Old Republic.
