It began when Pedro I declared Brazil free from Portugal. He fought a war to win this independence. After he left, his son Pedro II became the next leader.

Pedro II was only five years old when he took power. At first, the country had many fights between local groups. This time was very messy and lacked strong leaders. As Pedro II grew up, he brought peace to the land. He led Brazil through several wars and helped it grow.

Many people moved to Brazil from Europe during this time. The country also saw new art, books, and plays. However, many people were still kept as slaves. This was very unfair. Over time, new laws were passed to stop slavery. Finally, slavery was ended in 1888.

Even with peace, the empire did not last forever. In 1889, military leaders took control. They ended the empire and started a republic. This changed how Brazil was run for good.
