She became the first female president of her country. She also became the first elected female head of state in all of the Americas. This was a huge moment for women in politics. Her life was full of hard choices and big changes. She spent many years fighting for free speech and peace.

Violeta's journey began with her work at a newspaper. Her husband, Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal, ran a paper called La Prensa. The government often jailed him because he spoke against them. When he was killed in 1978, Violeta took over the newspaper. She used the paper to tell the truth even when it was dangerous. She even faced threats of prison from the government.

In 1979, a revolution changed Nicaragua. Violeta joined a group called the Junta of National Reconstruction to help lead. This group included leaders like Daniel Ortega. However, the government began to act in ways Violeta did not like. They started to control the news and the radio. On April 19, 1980, Violeta resigned from the government. She went back to running La Prensa to protect free speech.

By 1989, a large group of 14 political parties joined together. They chose Violeta to be their candidate for president. Her group was called the National Opposition Union, or UNO. Most people thought she would lose the election. Her main promises were to end the civil war and stop mandatory military service. On February 25, 1990, she won the election.

As president, Violeta had a very difficult job. The country was facing a long war and money problems. She worked hard to end the fighting between different groups. She helped fix the banking system and the country's money. She also worked with her political rivals to keep things stable. She served as president for six years until 1997.
