She made history by becoming the first woman to serve as President of her country. She held this important role from 2010 to 2014. Before she led the whole nation, she worked in many different government jobs. She served as a minister for public security and as the First Vice President. These roles helped her learn how to manage a country. Her work helped her prepare for the big job of presidency.

Chinchilla's journey to the presidency was quite unexpected for many people. She was not a well-known member of her party, the National Liberation Party, at first. Many people believe that President Óscar Arias helped mentor her for the role. During her campaign, she used the slogan "firme y honesta," which means "firm and honest." She focused on helping families and protecting the environment. She also promised to build 20,000 homes for people with low incomes. Her goal was to make the country safer and more stable.

As president, Chinchilla had to handle many difficult situations. In 2010, there was a dispute over a place called Isla Calero. The military from Nicaragua occupied this small, uninhabited island. Chinchilla asked the International Court of Justice to help solve the problem. The court ordered both countries to leave the island in 2011. She also decided to build a long gravel road near the border. This road was named "Ruta 1858, Juan Rafael Mora Porras" to honor a hero.

Chinchilla also worked hard on rules for safety and the earth. She wanted Costa Rica to be carbon neutral by the year 2021. To help the environment, she stopped new oil exploration in 2011. She also focused on keeping people safe from crime. During her time in office, the number of homicides went down. The number of femicides also dropped by nearly 70 percent. She believed that helping people with poverty could help stop crime too.

Being a leader is not always easy, and Chinchilla faced many hard jobs. Her relationship with the legislature was sometimes difficult and full of arguments. By 2013, some polls showed she was not very popular with the public. The country also faced economic troubles like rising unemployment and debt. Even with these challenges, she remained a very significant figure. In 2016, the World Economic Forum called her one of the most powerful women in Central America.
