She was born in 1931 in a place called La Rioja. As a young woman, she worked as a nightclub dancer. She chose the name Isabel for herself. Later, she met Juan Perón. He was a very important leader in Argentina. They married in 1961 in Madrid, Spain.

Isabel helped her husband with his political work while he was away from his country.

Isabel became a very powerful person in the government. In 1973, Juan Perón won an election to be president. He chose Isabel to be his Vice President. This means she was the second person in charge.

In June 1974, Juan Perón became very sick. He died on July 1, 1974. Because of this, Isabel became the President of Argentina. She was the first woman in the world to hold this title. People often called her "La Presidente."

Her time as president was a very difficult period. The country faced a lot of fighting between different groups. Some groups were on the left and some were on the right. Isabel tried to keep her husband's old ideas. She made new laws for workers and for fuel stations. However, many people began to lose support for her. A man named José López Rega was a close friend of hers.

He held a lot of power over her choices. He was the Minister of Social Welfare.

There was much trouble and violence during these years. A group called the Triple A was formed by López Rega. This group was a paramilitary force that caused many deaths. At the same time, other groups like the Montoneros and the ERP were also active. These groups used violence to try to change the government. The government also used force to stop these groups. This led to many people being arrested or disappearing. It was a very unstable time for the people of Argentina.

In 1976, the military took control of the government. This event is known as a coup. Isabel was no longer in power. She was placed under house arrest for five years. In 1981, she moved to live in Spain. Later, democracy returned to Argentina in 1983. She was a guest at a big ceremony for the new president. She helped talk about making things better, but she did not lead again. In 2007, a judge in Argentina asked for her to be arrested for things that happened in 1976.
