He served as the president of his country during two different times. He first took office in 1986 and later returned in 2006. Arias is well known for his work to bring peace to his region. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987. This is a very special award for people who work for peace. He studied law and economics at the University of Costa Rica.

During the 1980s, many countries near Costa Rica were facing hard times. There were wars and fighting in places like El Salvador and Nicaragua. Arias created a plan to help stop these conflicts. He wanted foreign powers to leave the region and stop helping fighters. He also wanted to bring democracy and peace to the area. His ideas helped lead to peace agreements in El Salvador and Nicaragua later on. This work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987.

While he was president the first time, Arias changed the economy. Costa Rica used to focus mostly on coffee and bananas. He helped the country move toward new things like tourism. He also helped the country grow exotic flowers and fruits. Some people in his political party, the National Liberation Party, did not agree with these changes. They felt he was moving away from the party's old ideas. However, these changes helped shape the modern Costa Rican economy.

After his first term ended, Arias worked to become president again. In 2003, a court ruling allowed former presidents to run for office again. Arias won the election in 2006 after a very close race. He beat a candidate named Ottón Solís by 18,169 votes.

During this second term, he spoke to many world leaders. In 2009, he told leaders to spend more on schools than on armies. He believed education was the key to helping the world grow.

Later in his life, Arias stayed involved in many important things. In 2009, he tried to help solve a big problem in Honduras. He acted as a mediator between two leaders to find a way to peace. He also served on the board for the International Criminal Court's Trust Fund for Victims. Even after leaving office, his ideas about peace and education remained important. He continues to be a significant figure in the history of Central America.
