He was born in San Salvador on October 18, 1959. Before he was a politician, he spent many years reporting the news. He worked for Channel 10 and Channel 12. He even worked for CNN en Español for several years. In 1994, he won the Maria Moors Cabot Prize. This award was for helping press freedom. He was a man who used words to tell stories to the world.

Funes began his career in news reporting in February 1986. He became a news director and hosted a program called The Daily Interview. One big moment happened in 1991 during the Salvadoran Civil War. He interviewed a leader named Schafik Hándal. This interview caused many people to talk about his work. Later, he joined Grupo Megavisión in 2005. He moved from reporting news to running for the highest office in his country. He wanted to change how things worked in El Salvador.

In 2009, Funes ran for president with the FMLN party.

He was the first person from that party to run. He used a slogan like "Yes, we can!" to inspire voters. He promised to create jobs and help the farming industry. He also promised to keep the U.S. dollar as the money used in El Salvador. Funes won the election with 1,354,000 votes. This was a peaceful change of power for the nation.

As the 79th president, Funes started many new programs. He wanted to help people living in poverty. He gave free meals and shoes to schoolchildren. He also gave money to elderly people and helped families get property titles. He worked to make sure people were not treated unfairly because of who they were. However, he also faced hard times. In 2009, Hurricane Ida brought heavy rain and caused a disaster. A community called Verapaz was even buried by rocks from a volcano.

Funes used his time as leader to talk about the past. He said sorry for things the government did during the civil war. He spoke about the deaths of six Jesuits in 1989. He also apologized for the death of Archbishop Óscar Romero.
