Romero studied very hard to serve his faith. He went to a seminary in San Miguel when he was thirteen. Later, he went to the Gregorian University in Rome. He finished his studies there in 1941. He was ordained as a priest in Rome on 4 April 1942. On his way home from Italy, he and a friend were held in camps in Cuba. They were later released and traveled through Mexico to reach El Salvador.

At first, people thought he was a social conservative. Everything changed after his friend, Rutilio Grande, was killed in 1977. This event made Romero speak out against social injustice. He began to defend the rights of poor and vulnerable people.

Many people in El Salvador listened to Romero on the radio.

He gave weekly sermons that were broadcast on the station YSAX. These talks were very important to the people. It is estimated that 73% of people in the countryside listened to him. He used his voice to talk about human rights and violence. He also wrote a letter to President Jimmy Carter in 1980. He warned that military aid might make injustice worse.
