He served as the fourth Archbishop of San Salvador in El Salvador. Romero is remembered for his defense of human rights and the poor. He spoke out against social injustice during a violent conflict in his country. This conflict involved the military government and left-wing insurgents. His life and death eventually led to him being recognized as a saint.

Romero’s early life was shaped by both manual labor and intense study. He was born on 15 August 1917 in Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. His parents were Santos Romero and Guadalupe de Jesús Galdámez. His father taught him carpentry to ensure he had a trade. This was common because studies often did not lead to jobs. However, Romero chose to pursue the priesthood instead.

He entered a seminary at age thirteen and later studied in Rome. He earned a Licentiate in Theology in 1941. He was ordained a priest on 4 April 1942. During his journey home, he was detained in Cuban internment camps. He eventually reached El Salvador after traveling through Mexico.

Romero held several different roles within the church hierarchy. He first served as a parish priest in Anamorós. Later, he worked in San Miguel for over twenty years. During this time, he helped build a cathedral and started an Alcoholics Anonymous group. He was then appointed an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of San Salvador. In 1974, he became the Bishop of Santiago de María. This was a poor and rural region. Finally, in 1977, he became the Archbishop of San Salvador.

His personal views changed significantly during his time as archbishop. Initially, many saw him as a social conservative. This changed after the assassination of his friend, Rutilio Grande, in March 1977. Grande was a priest who worked with the poor. Romero felt he had to follow the same path as his friend. He began to criticize the military government and social injustice. He also spoke against the torture and disappearance of people. He became a powerful voice for the most vulnerable citizens.

Romero used the media to reach a massive audience. He delivered weekly sermons on the radio station YSAX. These broadcasts were a primary source of news for many people. Surveys showed that 73% of the rural population listened to him. In urban areas, 47% of people listened regularly. He used this platform to denounce human rights violations. He even wrote an open letter to U.S. President Jimmy Carter in 1980. He warned that military aid might increase political repression in El Salvador.

Romero was killed on 24 March 1980. An assassin shot him while he was celebrating Mass.

While no one was convicted, a UN Truth Commission investigation had findings. They concluded that Major Roberto D'Aubuisson had ordered the killing. D'Aubuisson was a leader of a death squad. This event had a deep impact on the history of El Salvador. It occurred as the Salvadoran Civil War was escalating.

The Catholic Church has undergone a long process to honor him. In 1997, Pope John Paul II named him a Servant of God. The process for his beatification was later reopened by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Pope Francis declared him a martyr on 3 February 2015. This led to his beatification on 23 May 2015.

Finally, Pope Francis canonized him as a saint on 14 October 2018.

Today, he is often called San Romero or Monseñor Romero.

Romero’s legacy connects to many different global ideas. Some scholars link him to liberation theology. This is a way of interpreting the faith through the lens of the poor. His relationship with this theology was debated by many. Others see him as an exemplar of these ideas. His work also inspired international human rights recognition. In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 24 as a special day. This day honors the right to truth regarding human rights violations.
