He served as the Prime Minister of Sweden during two distinct periods. His first term lasted from 1969 to 1976. He returned to the office from 1982 until 1986. During these years, he also led the Swedish Social Democratic Party. Palme was a central figure in both domestic and international politics. His leadership style and political views made him a deeply polarizing figure. Some people admired his vision, while others strongly disagreed with his methods.

Palme's political identity was shaped by his early life and global travels.

Although he was born into an affluent, conservative family in Stockholm, his views shifted toward socialism. He spent time in the United States, where he witnessed deep economic inequality. He also observed the harsh realities of racial segregation in America. Later, travels through Asia, including India and Japan, exposed him to the effects of colonialism. These experiences convinced him that imperialism was a major global issue. He believed that war posed the greatest threat to all of mankind.

His rise through the Swedish political system was steady and rapid.

He began as a personal secretary to Prime Minister Tage Erlander in 1953. This group of young aides was often called "the boys." In 1957, he was elected to the Swedish parliament representing Jönköping County. He eventually held several important cabinet positions. He served as the Minister of Communications and the Minister of Education. In 1969, he succeeded Erlander as the leader of the Social Democratic Party. Shortly after, King Gustaf VI Adolf asked him to form a government as Prime Minister.

On the world stage, Palme was known for his non-alignment policy.

This meant Sweden did not officially join the major power blocs of the Cold War. He frequently criticized the foreign policies of both the United States and the Soviet Union. He spoke out against authoritarian regimes and imperialist ambitions globally. For example, he denounced the apartheid system in South Africa as a "particularly gruesome system." He also criticized leaders like Francisco Franco in Spain and Augusto Pinochet in Chile. His vocal support for various liberation movements made him a controversial figure.

One of his most famous moments of protest occurred in 1968.

He participated in a demonstration against American involvement in the Vietnam War. In 1972, he issued a strong condemnation of American bombings in Hanoi. He compared these bombings to several historical crimes and massacres. This specific criticism caused a temporary freeze in diplomatic relations between Sweden and the United States. Despite the tension, Palme remained committed to his role as a critic of global injustice. He sought to use his platform to defend the rights of developing nations.

In 1986, a tragic event occurred that shocked the entire Scandinavian region.

For decades, the investigation into his death remained a massive mystery. A local man named Christer Pettersson was once convicted but was later acquitted by an appeals court. The case remained officially unsolved for many years, impacting the Swedish legal and political landscape.

In June 2020, Swedish prosecutors reached a new conclusion regarding the crime. They announced there was reasonable evidence that Stig Engström was the killer. However, because Engström had died in 2000, no trial could take place. The authorities subsequently closed the investigation. This decision faced significant criticism from journalists, police, and lawyers. Many argued that the evidence against Engström was merely circumstantial and too weak for a conviction. As a result, the true identity of Palme's assassin remains a subject of intense debate and uncertainty.
