He was a Catholic priest and a famous poet. He also worked in politics to help change his country. Cardenal lived a life full of big ideas and many different roles. He was known as a liberation theologian. This means he used his faith to think about helping people. He believed that religion and helping the poor went together. His life showed how one person can be many things at once.

Cardenal did many special things during his life. He founded a community on the Solentiname Islands. This group was made of peasants and artists. They lived together and made art like paintings and sculptures. He also worked in the government for many years. From 1979 to 1987, he was the Minister of Culture. He wanted to lead a revolution without any vengeance. He used his position to help the culture of Nicaragua grow.

His journey began in the city of Granada, Nicaragua. He was born into a wealthy family in 1925. Cardenal studied literature in Managua and in New York City. He also spent time studying in Mexico. In 1957, he joined a monastery in Kentucky, USA. He met another famous poet named Thomas Merton there. Later, he became a priest in 1965. His life was always moving between art, faith, and study.

Cardenal had some hard times with the Catholic Church. In 1984, Pope John Paul II suspended him from his duties. This happened because Cardenal would not leave his government job. This suspension lasted for a very long time. However, things changed in 2019. Pope Francis lifted the suspension and welcomed him back. This allowed Cardenal to act as a priest again. It was a very important moment for him and his faith.

Cardenal wrote many beautiful books of poetry. Some of his poems were about love and life. Other poems were about science and evolution. He even wrote about his political ideas in his work. He won many awards for his writing. In 2005, he was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died in March 2020. He was buried on the Solentiname Islands where he started his art community.
