He was a priest and a poet. He also worked in the government. He helped lead the culture of his land. He was the Minister of Culture from 1979 to 1987.

Cardenal started a group of artists on the Solentiname Islands. This group was a community of peasants and artists. They made art like paintings and statues. Many writers and artists visited them there.

He had many different ideas about faith and politics. He believed in liberation theology. This is a way of thinking about the Bible and helping the poor. Because of his political work, he had trouble with the Catholic Church. In 1984, Pope John Paul II told him to leave his government job. The Pope suspended him from his duties as a priest. This lasted for many years. In 2019, Pope Francis lifted the suspension. This meant Cardenal could be a priest again.

Cardenal wrote many books of poetry. His poems were about love, science, and his beliefs. He died in 2020. He was buried on the islands he loved.
