He was also the ruler of Vatican City. He held this position from June 1963 until he died in August 1978. Before he was the Pope, his name was Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini. He was born in a small village called Concesio in Italy.

His father was a lawyer and a member of the Italian Parliament. His mother came from a family of rural nobility. He grew up with two brothers who became a doctor and a lawyer.

Montini spent many years working in the Vatican civil service.

He worked closely with Pope Pius XII for a long time. During a large war, Montini did many hard jobs to help people. He helped start an office to find missing people. This office received almost ten million requests for information. They sent back over eleven million replies to help families. He also helped give food and shelter to many refugees. In 1944, his group gave out nearly two million free meals in Rome alone.

After his work in the Vatican, Montini became a leader in Milan.

He liked to meet with artists and writers in the city. He even helped build over 100 new churches for people to visit. He believed these buildings were special places for rest.

In 1958, a new Pope named John XXIII made Montini a cardinal.

When John XXIII died, Montini was elected to be the next Pope. He chose the name Paul VI. One of his biggest tasks was finishing the Second Vatican Council. This council was a large meeting to make changes in the Church. Paul VI helped manage these changes carefully. He also wanted different religious groups to be friends. He met with leaders from other churches to make agreements.

Paul VI was a leader who traveled to many different places.

He wanted rich people to help those who had very little. Because of his life and work, the Church later honored him. Pope Francis named him a saint in 2018.
