Pope John XXIII was a very important leader of the Catholic Church.

He was also the ruler of Vatican City for several years. Born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, he grew up in a small Italian village called Sotto il Monte. His family was quite large, and he was one of thirteen children. His parents, Giovanni Battista and Marianna Mazzola, were sharecroppers who worked on farms.

This humble start was very different from the families of some other church leaders.

Roncalli spent many years preparing for his big roles in the Church. He finished his studies and became a priest in 1904.

Later, he served as a bishop and traveled to many different countries. He worked in places like Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. During World War II, he used his job to help people in danger. He worked to save many Jewish refugees from harm during the Holocaust. He helped people by sending certificates and finding safe ways for them to travel.

In 1958, something unexpected happened for the Catholic Church. After the death of Pope Pius XII, Roncalli was elected as the new pope. He was 76 years old at the time. Many people thought he would only be a "caretaker" pope. This means they thought he would just look after things for a short time. Instead, he surprised everyone by calling a huge meeting called the Second Vatican Council.

This meeting began in October 1962 to help the Church change with the modern world.

John XXIII had many important ideas about how people should treat each other. He believed that all people were equal because they were all made in God's image. He wanted the Church to be more involved in the world and in politics. He even changed the number of cardinals from 70 to 85. He also made sure to name the first cardinals from places like Africa, Japan, and the Philippines.

He worked hard to help different Christian groups talk and work together.

Sadly, John XXIII did not live to see the big Council finish. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 1962 and died in June 1963.

Because of his kind and helpful life, people started calling him "the Good Pope." The Catholic Church later began a process to recognize his holiness. In 2013, Pope Francis declared him a saint. He was officially canonized in 2014 alongside Pope John Paul II.
