Leaders wanted to find new ways to connect with the modern world. They hoped to make the Church's message easier for everyone to understand. This was a time of big changes for many people around the world.

The council worked through a long series of steps to reach its goals. First, Pope John XXIII announced his plan in early 1959. This surprised many leaders at the time. Then, there was a long period of preparation that lasted over three years.

Experts and bishops from all over the world sent in their ideas and wishes. They worked on many different topics like theology and prayer. Finally, the leaders met in person to discuss everything and make decisions.

Pope John XXIII was the person who started this whole process. He was elected in October 1958. He believed the Church needed a kind of updating called aggiornamento. He wanted to open the windows of the Church to let in fresh air.

After he passed away, Pope Paul VI helped lead the rest of the council. The meetings happened every autumn from 1962 until 1965. They all gathered in a famous place called St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

During the meetings, the council produced 16 important documents. These included four main documents called constitutions. One focused on how to study the Bible. Another talked about the Church's mission to promote peace in the world.

One of the biggest changes was how the Mass was performed. Before this, much of it was done in Latin. The council allowed the use of local languages so people could participate more fully.

This council connects to how people live their lives today. It changed the way many people experience their faith. For example, it encouraged people to read the Bible more often.

It also changed the way religious leaders dress and act. Some people wanted to keep the old traditions exactly the same. Others felt it was time to move in a new direction. These different ideas helped shape the modern Catholic Church we see now.
