Ecumenism is a special idea for Christians. It is the belief that different Christian groups should work together. These groups are often called denominations.

Many of these churches have different traditions. However, they often share the same basic beliefs. They all believe in Jesus and the Bible. Most also use the same way to baptize people. This shared foundation helps them find common ground. The goal is to build closer relationships and promote unity among all churches.

There are many ways this cooperation works in real life. Some churches might join together to run a soup kitchen. They might host a Bible study for people from different traditions.

Other churches hold special prayer services together. For example, some hold a service called Stations of the Cross. They might even rotate which local church hosts the service each week. Some groups even share a special meal called a Lovefeast. These activities help people see their shared faith in action.

History shows that the word has deep roots. It comes from the Greek word "oikoumene." This means "the whole inhabited world."

In the past, it was used to talk about the Roman Empire. Long ago, leaders held large meetings called ecumenical councils. These councils helped clarify what Christians believed. There were seven such councils accepted by both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. Today, the word focuses more on how different denominations can cooperate.

Important groups have been formed to help this mission. In 1920, Germanus V wrote a letter to urge cooperation. Later, in 1937, leaders decided to start the World Council of Churches.

This council includes many large traditions. It has members like the Anglican Communion and the Methodist Council. It also includes the Lutheran World Federation and the Baptist World Alliance. The Roman Catholic Church joins their meetings as an observer. There are also smaller regional groups that work on this goal locally.

Understanding ecumenism helps us see how big the Christian world is. There are many different families of churches. These include the Eastern Orthodox, the Catholic, and Mainline Protestant groups. There are also Evangelical and Pentecostal churches.

Some groups are very large, while others are very small. For example, the Shakers are a denomination with only two members. Even with these differences, ecumenism looks for ways to bridge the gaps. It seeks to turn many different groups into a unified community.
