The word catholic comes from an ancient Greek word. It means "universal" or "general."

In the Christian faith, this idea is very important. It means a belief system is whole and complete. It should include all parts of the faith. It should also welcome all kinds of people. This idea is found in the Nicene Creed. This creed was made at the First Council of Constantinople in 381. It describes the church as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

To be catholic is to be all-embracing. It means nothing is missing from the message.

Many different groups use this word in their own ways. The Roman Catholic Church is a very large group. However, other groups like the Eastern Orthodox Church also use the term. Some groups that split from Rome, like Anglicans, use it too.

Even some Protestant groups, like Lutherans and Methodists, use the word. They use it to show they follow the old ways. They want to show they are heirs of the apostolic faith. This means they follow the teachings of the apostles. They see themselves as part of a long, unbroken history.

History shows that the early church had many big changes. At first, some leaders believed the church was organized under five main cities. These were Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople, and Jerusalem. The bishop of Rome was often seen as a leader among them.

Over many centuries, different groups had big disagreements. These disagreements led to splits called schisms. One major split happened in 1054. This divided the church into the West and the East. Later, in the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation caused more changes. These events changed how different groups see their place in history.

Groups that claim catholicity often share certain traditions. They might use formal sacraments to show God's grace. A sacrament is a visible sign of something invisible.

One very common sacrament is baptism. This is often the first step for a person. Other sacraments include the Eucharist, which uses bread and wine. Many groups also use special things in their worship. They might use candles, music, or incense. They may also use the sign of the cross. These things help people feel connected to their faith.

Understanding catholicity helps us see how many groups connect. Even when churches disagree, they often use the same ideas. They might all believe that Jesus is divine. They might all value the teachings from early councils. Some groups focus on the authority of the Pope in Rome. Other groups focus on being part of the whole body of believers. It is a way to talk about being part of something huge. It connects many different people across the whole world.
