A Christian denomination is a specific religious group within Christianity. These groups consist of many church congregations that share certain traits. They might have the same name or a shared history. They often use the same style of worship. Some denominations even have a specific founder. Most of these groups call themselves churches. However, some newer groups use names like fellowships or assemblies.

Groups become different denominations because of their specific beliefs. They might disagree on the nature of Jesus. Some groups have different ideas about how to read the Bible. Others disagree on who has the authority to lead. These differences in doctrine and leadership create divisions. Some people call these groups branches of Christianity. These branches share similar practices but still stay distinct. They can vary widely in how they view one another.

History shows how these groups formed over many centuries. In the sixteenth century, a movement called the Reformation happened. During this time, Protestants separated from the Catholic Church. They felt certain practices did not follow the Bible. Today, Western Christianity includes both Catholics and Protestants. Protestantism includes many traditions like Baptists and Methodists. Some groups, called Restorationists, try to return to early Christianity. They appeared after the Second Great Awakening movement.

There are many large groups with huge numbers of followers. The Catholic Church has over 1.3 billion members worldwide. This accounts for about 50.1% of all Christians. Protestantism is also very large with 1.047 billion people in 2024. This makes up about 39.8% of all Christians. The Eastern Orthodox Church is the second-largest body. It has about 230 million followers. Orthodox Christians make up about 11.9% of the global Christian population.

People have different ideas about what these groups mean. Some believe in a concept called denominationalism. This is the idea that all Christian groups are legitimate. They believe labels do not change the main religion. Other groups do not agree with this idea. Some claim to be the only true successor to Jesus. They might reject the word denomination entirely. They want to show they are the original church. This shows how many different ways people view faith.
