A religious denomination is a subgroup within a larger religion. These groups share a common name and specific traditions. They might have their own leaders or ways of doing things. Some groups use words like "church" or "fellowship" to describe themselves. Denominations help organize large religions into smaller, connected parts.

In Christianity, denominations are often separated by their doctrines. Doctrine is the set of beliefs that a group follows. Groups might disagree on how to read the Bible. They may also differ on who has the most authority. Some focus on the role of the Pope. Others have different ideas about the end of the world. The Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination.

Islam also has several different branches and sects. Sunni Islam is the largest denomination in the world. About 90% of all Muslims belong to the Sunni branch. The Shia branch makes up about 10% of the population. There are also smaller groups like the Ibadis. Some people call themselves non-denominational Muslims. A survey says up to 25% of Muslims feel this way.

Judaism has different movements that have grown since ancient times. The main lines are Orthodox, Reform, and Conservative. These groups may have different ways of following Jewish law. They might also use different languages during their services. Many traditional groups use Hebrew for their prayers. In the United States, these three groups are very common. In Israel, the main split is between religious and non-religious people.

Sometimes, different religious groups come together for one event. This is called being multi-denominational. It helps many different people feel included and represented. Chaplains are people trained to help others with their faith. They often work in the military or large organizations. They may help people from many different religions at once. Some people even mix ideas from two different faiths.
